Alaska has become a huge cruise ship port, with major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Disney, and Celebrity all sending ships to the “Last Frontier” this summer. So now, the most popular ports are the same as they were 10 years ago when the large cruise ships started coming: Seattle and Anchorage.

If you’re planning a cruise, Alaska is one of the several destinations that has been popular with cruisers in recent years. The largest cruise ships were built to allow for an amazing amount of passengers on board, but the regulations in many cities and countries put limits on the number of people per room. This means that once you’ve booked your cruise, you can’t cancel and reschedule your trip to a smaller ship.

Alaska welcomed its first major cruise ship of the season.

Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas called at Ketchikan, nearly two years without a large ship in Alaskan waters.

Large Cruise Ships Return to Alaska

This is a joyous day for the Alaska tourism industry and the communities that depend on tourism in Alaska. This short boating season makes the difference for many small local businesses between reopening or permanent closure. We are grateful to our delegation in Congress, the governor and legislators for their hard work in bringing cruise ships back to the state this year, said Sarah Leonard, president and CEO of the Alaska Tourism Industry Association. We are proud to fight by their side on behalf of our members and all tourism businesses in the state to support them during this time of recovery.

Before the pandemic, in 2019, more than 52,000 Alaskans depended on tourism for their income, and 1 in 10 jobs in Alaska was related to tourism. more than 52,000 Alaskans depended on tourism for their income, and 1 in 10 jobs in Alaska was related to tourism. The industry has invested about $4.5 billion in the state, with cruise lines attracting more than half of Alaska’s visitors.

Even before the pandemic, tourism was poised to become Southeast Alaska’s leading industry by 2024. The Alaska Travel Industry Association estimates that 1.44 million visitors will come to the region and spend about $800 million.

Today, most major cruise lines are returning to the region, but with limited capacity and a shortened season that will last until October. According to the International Association of Cruise Lines, nine major cruise ships will make 78 trips. In addition to several smaller ships, cruise lines such as Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruises and Silversea Cruises are bringing their guests to Alaska.

This summer we have already seen an increase in the number of independent travelers, which is good news for many businesses, Mr. Leonard said. However, we know that large cruise ships also play an important role in the recovery of our tourism.
