Expedia and Iberostar are joining forces to launch a sustainable travel program that seeks to encourage responsible travel for both consumers and businesses. The program is called “Travel Green,” and it will promote tourism practices that honor the environment while helping to protect the natural resources of the areas traveled to.

If you’re looking for a vacation spot that’s truly eco-friendly, you should join in on this exclusive partnership between Iberostar and Expedia. This is a pledge both parties have made to reduce the company’s carbon footprint. The pledge is simple: by the end of the year, both parties will have reduced their carbon footprints by 10% of the total industry’s carbon footprint. This move will help Iberostar and Expedia join a select group of companies committed to working towards an eco-friendly future. The partnership is just the latest in a series of steps taken by Iberostar to be a leader in sustainability.

Iberostar has partnered with Expedia Group and UNESCO to extend the UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge, which encourages responsible tourist practices, community resilience, and cultural preservation.

More than 80% of Iberostar’s hotels are situated near the water. The hotel company has previously committed to conservation and sustainability efforts, with its most recent efforts including the Wave of Change initiative, which expanded its coral nurseries through its Protecting and Restoring the Mesoamerican Reef Project and promotes sustainability initiatives throughout the resorts. Iberostar has also put in place plans to eliminate waste, become carbon neutral, and expand its sustainably sourced seafood program within certain time periods.

The UNESCO Sustainable Travel Pledge, a collaboration between UNESCO and Expedia Group, was launched in 2019 to encourage sustainable travel and cultural protection. Iberostar’s agreement means it will promote the pledge’s sustainable practices, which include things like purchasing resort necessities from local companies and minimizing plastic waste.

“An industry-wide strategy is critical to achieving a robust recovery for tourism that contributes to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” stated Ernesto Ottone R., UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture. Iberostar Group has made a strong commitment to supporting our efforts to create genuinely sustainable tourism by signing the Pledge.”

“As tourism recovers, Iberostar’s commitment to pioneering a responsible tourism model has only become stronger,” stated Dr. Megan Morikawa, Iberostar Group’s Global Sustainability Director. “The UNESCO Pledge enables us to share not only our 2030 Agenda journey, but also to share and learn from the network of tourism providers in the UNESCO Pledge community. We believe that tourism may help accelerate answers in the face of current and future problems.”
