The $85 million Amber Cove Cruise Center, which opened in late 2015, allows cruise passengers to explore a tropical, mountainous area that was used as a shooting site for the original Jurassic Park film.

Co-developed by Carnival Corporation and Grupo B&R, a 100-year-old Dominican company focused on port operations and shipping, the port’s debut brought cruise ships back to the country’s north coast for the first time in 30 years.

Ships are returning to port after a 16-month hiatus due to the worldwide epidemic, including the Carnival Horizon, which arrived about 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6. To commemorate the arrival of the first cruise ship at Amber Cove, passengers were welcomed with traditional Dominican music and dance.

Amber Cove Cruise Port Review (Dominican Republic)

Amber Cove Provides A Diverse Range Of Shore Excursions.

While Amber Cove is jam-packed with activities, the surrounding region has much to offer as well. The port’s development aim was to provide cruise guests with convenient access to local attractions, and the transportation hub now offers rental vehicles, taxi services, and one of the most comprehensive shore excursion lineups in the Caribbean area.

There’s something to suit everyone’s preferences.

  • Adrenaline seekers may ride ATVs through tropical woods, zip through the forest on a zip line, ride horses, or fly over the Dominican countryside in a helicopter.
  • Water enthusiasts may visit local beaches, participate in kayak, paddleboard, and snorkeling excursions, or go on a deep-sea fishing adventure. The Ocean World aquatic adventure park, which is also close, enables guests to swim with dolphins, stingrays, and sharks, among other things.
  • A trip down Puerto Plata’s malecón, a three-mile-long beachfront boardwalk with bars, traditional eateries, and stores, is a great way to learn about Dominican culture. A museum dedicated to amber, the petrified tree resin collected in the region and turned into valuable jewelry, is also located in the city. Rum connoisseurs may visit the Brugal plant for a tour and sampling of one of the Dominican Republic’s most renowned products.
  • A visit to Fort San Felipe is a must for history enthusiasts. It is one of the earliest colonial military strongholds in the Caribbean region, having been built in 1540 to defend the area from pirates.
