If you live near Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, chances are you’ve heard of a place called The Buttery. This spot is the best breakfast spot in Hilton Head Island and the only place to eat breakfast with a view of the ocean. It boasts its own beach, the largest pool in Hilton Head Island, and plenty of outdoor seating that looks out onto the azure waters of the Atlantic.

We visited Hilton Head Island, SC last week. We tried out five different breakfast places on this trip. Our favorite by far was at the Beach House Cafe. It is a great place to start your day. We had a wonderful meal with eggs, pancakes, and hash browns. We shared a fresh fruit compote and all around everything was delicious.

The Hilton Head Island is a beautiful and expensive tourist destination, and its many fine restaurants are no exception. However, while many of the restaurants in the Hilton Head Island are good, there are some that are truly phenomenal. If you are a tourist in Hilton Head Island, it is important that you eat at a good restaurant. Here are three of my favorites:

Best Breakfast in Hilton Head Island

Whatever type of breakfast you’re looking for, you’ll find it on Hilton Head Island. From coffee and pastries to pancakes, Benedict crab to avocado toast, there are plenty of great dishes and places to eat breakfast on the island. One of the best options is to choose from over 250 restaurants in Hilton Head.

Here are the best places to visit when you’re in the Lowcountry – all with outdoor seating and many with water views!

Palmetto Bay Sunrise Cafe

The Palmetto Bay Sunrise Café, on the south side of the island, has something for everyone. The breakfast menu offers everything from French toast to burritos to crab cakes with Benedict eggs. Great food and plenty of outdoor seating on the large south-facing porch – you’ll want to sit back and enjoy a leisurely breakfast.

Hilton Head Social Bakery

There’s a reason Hilton Head Social Bakery is number one on Tripadvisor for breakfast! This little bakery has it all: a picturesque view, authentic French pastries, excellent coffee and a friendly atmosphere. The raisin bread (pictured above) is a brioche dough filled with a raisin cream. Croissants are a favorite, but they also have savory options.

This hidden spot has no indoor seating, but they do have outdoor tables overlooking the marina, where you can have your breakfast overlooking the ocean!

Location:  Shelter Cove Harbour (17 Harborside Lane). You can’t see it from the street or parking lot, but go down the alley after the Neptune statue and turn right. It’s just before we get to Scott’s Fish Market.

Southern Coney and Breakfast

Here you can find authentic food and the best breakfast in southern style. They also offer vegetarian and vegan options. Sit inside at the counter or in a booth or outside at tables on the sidewalk. Don’t miss the banana pancakes and don’t forget to check out the daily specials.

Java Burrito

If you like coffee and breakfast burritos, this is the place for you. They bring breakfast to a whole new level, with everything from sandwiches and bagels to breakfast bowls and of course burritos made with local produce and fresh fruits and vegetables. Take it with your choice of protein (including eggs and fish cooked to order), toppings and extras. They offer gluten-free and vegan options, as well as full coffee.

Nectar Farm Kitchen

Nectar is one of Hilton Head’s newest restaurants. They offer a full breakfast menu, from appetizers to cocktails and cold coffee. Favorites include the sweet potato fritters and the Southern Benedict on a homemade sweet potato bisque. For a healthy option, try avocado toast (pictured above).

Watusi Cafe & Coffee Bar

Breakfast at the Watusi Cafe is offered throughout the day, so there’s no need to rush. Choice of biscuits and gravy, breakfast sandwiches, seafood omelette, Belgian waffles with berries and whipped cream. They even have a doggie menu on the patio!

Palmetto Dunes General Store

For a quick breakfast in the middle of the island, the one-stop shop is a must. The restaurant prepares homemade cinnamon rolls daily. You can also take away a full breakfast at one of the best prices on the island. Take a picnic to the beach or eat at the kitchen counter on the porch.

If you’re looking for a gluten-free breakfast, you should definitely check out the G-Free spot. They have a whole bakery with gluten free baked goods, muffins and breads, and breakfast sandwiches. And they have two separate kitchen lines – gluten-free and regular – so the whole family can have breakfast together.

Skull Creek Dockside

For brunch overlooking the water, nothing beats the Skull Creek Dockside Restaurant. It offers a full menu for brunch and Sunday lunch, with favorites like steak and eggs, lobster quiche, fried chicken and waffles, as well as brunch cocktails at the outdoor bar. Lunch on the terrace or inside in the dining room.

Skull Creek Boathouse

Just off Dockside is the Skull Creek Boathouse, a popular vacation spot on the island. The weekend brunch menu includes a Sunday brunch buffet, breakfast sandwiches (including a breakfast burger!) and all traditional brunch dishes. It is the perfect place to sit on the waterfront terrace and watch the dolphins. Or sip a tropical cocktail in one of the Adirondack chairs on the beach.

Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks

On the other side of Dockside is Hudson’s Seafood Restaurant. This is the place where you can enjoy fresh seafood and crabs right off the boat. Brunch includes everything from fried oysters Benedict to biscuits and gravy. Don’t miss the seafood at the oyster bar – always local in season. You can eat inside or on the jetty next to the crab boat.

Kenny B’s French Quarter Cafe

Kenny B’s Restaurant is a Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Award winner. With Cajun and New Orleans recipes like bignettes, fried goldfish and crawfish dishes, you’ll experience southern hospitality. This Creole restaurant offers indoor, outdoor and take-out meals.

The Black Marlin Bayside Grill

Black Marlin Bayside Grill offers everything from breakfast tacos to Bloody Marys for brunch. Try traditional dishes like pancakes, French toast, Benedict Crab Cakes or the all-American Breakfast Hash Browns with cheddar cheese, eggs and bacon. You can also check out the appetizer menu, which includes sushi nachos and the must-have Southern puppy chop. Here you’ll also find the Hurricane Bar, which specializes in frozen drinks. The Cahill Farmer’s Market is a must when you cross the bridge into Bluffton. The action takes place on a farm and you can buy all kinds of fresh products in the farm shop.
