Citi just launched a new no annual fee card. The card earns 5x Citi Dividend Miles on purchases at US restaurants, and 1x Citi ThankYou Points on all other purchases. It also has no annual fee, so if you are an existing Citi cardholder, you can immediately get this card. Another big advantage of the Citi Dividend Miles card is that it can be used at Citi’s online shops and at Citi ATMs (where available), unlike most no annual fee cards.

Citibank has just launched a new travel card that earns 5 points for every dollar spent within the first 90 days of opening the account. If you redeem 50,000 bonus points at $1,000 a year after opening the card, you’ll receive a $500 travel statement credit. That’s a nice way to earn points and a bonus on top of those earned by simply making your everyday purchases.

For those of you who want to earn more points and miles but also want to avoid annual fees, Citi has a new card to help you do both. The newly launched Citi Simplicity card comes with a 5x points earning rate on spending within its specific categories and a 0% introductory APR on purchases. With the card, you have the ability to use your Citi credit card for online purchases that earn three points per dollar on all purchases and one point per dollar on purchases in the following categories: gas, grocery, travel, and streaming services.

Citi gets aggressive with new card offering 5x profit with no annual fee

Gary Leff 10. June 2024

I am rewarded for the content and the many links on this blog. Citibank is an advertising partner of this site, as are American Express, Chase, Barclays and Capital One. All opinions expressed in this article are my own and have not been reviewed, approved or endorsed by my advertisers. I’m not going to tell you about all the credit cards out there. Instead, I’m going to focus on miles, points and cashback (and the currency that can be converted into them). The terms and conditions apply to the offers and benefits listed on this page.

Citi Custom CashSM Card

Citibank has introduced a new cashback card with no annual fee that is really interesting. It offers a 5% return in certain categories that change each month based on what you spend the most on. And since the money comes in the form of ThankYou points, if you have Citibank cards whose points convert to miles, you can combine your points – and get 5 times the transferable points, which is great.

The Citi Custom CashSM card offers an initial bonus of $200 cashback after spending $750 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. That’s 20,000 ThankYou points.

How to earn 5x at Citibank

This is how you really benefit from this card: Receive 5% cashback on purchases in your highest spending category each billing cycle, up to the first $500 (1% cashback thereafter). Here are the categories:

  • Restaurants
  • Fuel stations
  • Grocery stores
  • Choose travel and public transport
  • Select streaming services
  • Pharmacies
  • Do-it-yourself stores
  • Fitness clubs
  • Live show

The good thing is that you can focus on one spending category to get 5x bonuses, which is different from categories where you get bonuses on the other cards in your portfolio. And the 5% categories are automatic, so you don’t have to re-register every billing cycle or quarter – since your spending changes with every billing cycle, your income is automatically adjusted when you spend in one of the relevant categories.

Conversion to conversion points

The 5% cashback is nice, but I think the real value of this card is that it’s part of the larger Citi ecosystem. Because if you have a Citi Prestige or Citi Premier® card, you can combine and transfer points to airline partner cards. The Citi Premier® card offers an initial bonus of 60,000 ThankYou® points after spending $4,000 on purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. You also earn 3 points for every dollar spent at restaurants and grocery stores, as well as gas stations, air travel, and hotels.

Plus, the Citi® Double Cash card is also commission-free and earns 2% on every purchase (unlimited 1% cashback on purchases, plus an additional 1% on every purchase), in the form of ThankYou points that can be combined if you also have the Citi Prestige or Premier.

If you only have cards with no annual fee, you cannot convert these points to Airline Miles, but if you have a Prestige or Premier card, you can transfer points from your Citi Custom CashSM card to your Premier account and then convert them to Airline Miles or Airline Points:

  • Aeromexico Club Premier
  • Air France KLM Flying Blue
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Etihad Guest
  • EVA AirPays infinite miles
  • JetBlue TrueBlue
  • Enrichment of Malaysia Airlines
  • Qantas frequent flyer
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus
  • Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Although Virgin Atlantic miles are often worth less than other currencies, they do have some incredible assets.

Turkish Airlines offers a 48-hour waiting period for awards, so you can earn an award before you transfer points. Cancellation and reloading fees are only $25. First class to the Caribbean or Hawaii costs just 12,500 miles on United flights. Europe is only 45,000 miles in business class and India is 52,500 miles (plus fuel surcharges).

Qatar Airways recently lowered the prices of its biggest awards, and it’s really a useful program now.

Singapore Airlines is ideal for booking rewards on Singapore flights in the premium cabin on long-haul flights.

EVA Airways also has a very underrated program.

Obtaining approval for this card

Citibank usually doesn’t set any rules about the number of cards you can have, but does only issue one Citi Custom CashSM card account per person. This will limit the number of times this card can be used in each round of calculations, but I think you should focus on this card per person. If you have a spouse, why don’t you both get this card?

According to Citibank’s standard bonus rule, you can only claim the bonus for this particular product once every 48 months, but since the card is new, this shouldn’t be a problem for most people at this point.

Citi tapped into a pain point in the market with its $175k annual fee offer, but the new $0 annual fee card is going to be a game changer. It offers 5x miles on up to $50k in spend, $750 in reimbursement after your first purchase, and no annual fee. That’s a $2,500 annual bonus!.
