Disneyland Resort is bringing back the popular Stone Spa, the relaxing retreat that first debuted on the resort’s Anaheim property in 1998. The Stone Spa is a new addition to the Disneyland Resort’s Downtown Disney District, which will welcome the new attraction (which is part of the recently-opened Disney Springs) in early 2017. The new Stone Spa will combine the healing powers of the best mineral baths and massages in Disney’s history with the magic of Disney’s theme parks.
For the past few years, I’ve been searching for the best place to go for a long winter getaway. Usually, the cost of plane tickets limits my vacation choices. But then, I stumbled across a Disney resort. After a few months of digging, I found out that the resort in question is known as Disneyland Resort. It was in the news for a while, but I still wasn’t quite sure what the resort was. I finally decided to make a trip to Disneyland Resort, and there it was, nestled between two stores in the Downtown Disney shopping area.
Tenaya Stone Spa is coming to the Disneyland Resort in 2016. The new resort location will be situated between the ESPN Club and the Main Street Bakery where guests will be able to relax in the whirlpool, steam and sauna while enjoying a cup of coffee or tea in the Tenaya Stone Café.
Disneyland’s Grand Californian Hotel will welcome a new spa in September. The Tenaya Stone Spa is the vision of Disney Imagineers and brings the spirit of California’s indigenous cultures and Arts & Crafts movement to life.
The all-new boutique hideaway will open on September 16, 2024, with reservations already being taken. Eight treatment rooms, two for couples massage, four manicure/pedicure chairs, a relaxation area, men’s and women’s changing rooms, and a shopping store make the full-service spa a sanctuary for visitors.

“In the indigenous culture of the Yosemite Valley, the spa name Tenaya (pronounced ten-eye-a) may be translated as ‘to dream,’” explained Dawn Jackson, a Native American cultural adviser for Disney who started working on the project as an Imagineer on the Story Development team. “The spa offers a chance to relax into a dream-like condition, a reverie of being lost in one’s thoughts, finding equilibrium within oneself, for modern-day tourists seeking a break to dream and recharge.”
The new 6,000-square-foot facility is just a few feet away from the hotel’s entrance to Disney’s California Adventure Park, yet it seems like a world apart.
“The unique location and experience of Tenaya Stone Spa promotes relaxation, rejuvenation, and restoring balance,” stated Brett Perkins, director of Tenaya Stone Spa. “We use a mix of therapies and materials to provide personalized treatments that are stress-relieving, pampering, and meaningful.”
The spa is built in a four-part natural arrangement. The facility is organized in four directions: north, south, east, and west, with white, red, black, and yellow as the primary colors.
“In developing the spa, we aspired to create a fresh take on the principles of the Arts & Crafts movement by honoring nature. We drew inspiration from the foundation of the hotel, literally in the stones, the earth, and the trees, and figuratively in the promise of a place to relax and to dream,” said Katrina Mosher, art director, Walt Disney Imagineering.
There’s also a Tenaya Stone, which provides a unique environment for visitors to stop and establish an intention. The stone was given to me by a Miwok Elder and her family, who are Yosemite Valley descendants of Chief Tenaya.
Visitors can choose from a variety of treatments, including the Tenaya Signature Massage, the Tenaya River Stone Massage, the Head, Hands & Feet With Heart Massage, the Tenaya Signature Couples Massage and more.
