A float plane that is used to ferry passengers from Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula to the island of Kodiak has crashed, leaving nine people dead and at least two people injured, according to the Coast Guard.
A floatplane carrying nine passengers and two pilots crashed in Alaska’s Kenai Fjords National Park on Wednesday, killing the pilots and leaving four passengers injured, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Coast Guard officials say all nine passengers were from Holland America Cruise Line, a cruise line that operates cruises to Alaska and neighboring islands.

All six persons on board, including the pilot and five passengers on a beach excursion trip during their cruise holiday, have perished, according to the USCG.

The cruise industry was celebrating the resumption of operations to Alaska from the Port of Seattle just a few days ago, and cruise companies have continued to sail to the state. However, the atmosphere shifted on Thursday near the famous cruise port of Ketchikan when a floatplane carrying cruise guests crashed.
At 11:20 a.m., the US Coast Guard activated an Emergency Position Radio Beacon in the Misty Fjords region. The wreckage was also discovered on a nearby hill. The accident was responded to by the Coast Guard, Alaska State Troopers, the United States Forest Service, and the Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad.

A Jayhawk Coast Guard aircraft discovered the wreckage at 2:37 p.m., and it was verified that no survivors had been found. The pilot and five guests from Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam cruise ship were on board the aircraft.
The guests aboard the cruise ship were not on a cruise line-sponsored excursion, and Southeast Aviation owned the aircraft. The Misty Fjords is one of the many excursions offered by the business in the area. The excursions include round-trip transportation to and from Ketchikan’s cruise ship, as well as aerial views of the scenery and animals.

The Holland America cruise ship was at Ketchikan as part of a seven-night trip that began on July 31 in Seattle, Washington. Before returning to Seattle on August 7, the schedule includes numerous beautiful vistas and stops, including Juneau, Glacier Bay, Icy Strait Point, Sitka, and Ketchikan.
On July 25, the Nieuw Amsterdam was the first ship in the fleet to resume operations, and it is only on its second voyage. It’s a terrible tragedy, and we’re sending our condolences to the cruise passengers’ and pilot’s families and friends.
It’s not the first time a floatplane has crashed in Alaska with cruise passengers on board. In the year 2019, two aircraft collided near the cruise port in Ketchikan. Over a month later, another tragedy occurred when a floatplane crashed while attempting to land, and fortunately, everyone was rescued with the assistance of local boats.
