The Nieuw Amsterdam left the Port of Seattle on Saturday afternoon to begin off Holland America’s return to service and the resumption of its Alaska season, joining a small group of cruise lines that have resumed operations out of the United States.

The Nieuw Amsterdam is the first ship in the fleet to relaunch from the United States.

With the Nieuw Amsterdam cruise ship, the carnival-owned cruise company has made its comeback to U.S. cruises. At about 4:00 p.m. local time, the ship left the Port of Seattle.

On Friday, the cruise company held an event alongside sister line Princess Cruises to commemorate its return to operation, which was attended by Holland America President Gus Antorcha and even Carnival Corporation President Arnold Donald. The day came to a close with the vessel lighting up and announcing, “We’re Back.”

Today’s festivities are still going on, and Holland America Line has been updating everyone on social media. Captain Jeroen Van Donselaar, Brand Ambassador Seth Wayne, and the outstanding crew members greeted visitors as they boarded Nieuw Amsterdam at dock 91. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was also conducted at the terminal. As the ship eventually left Seattle, Washington, the group went up to the open deck under beautiful blue sky.

This is the first time in over 16 months that Holland America has sailed with people on board. The cruise company had previously stopped operations, but due to the efforts of Alaska senators, it has been allowed to restart operations out of Seattle. In May, President Biden signed the Alaska Tourism Restoration Act, which allows cruise ships to avoid sailing to Canada under the Passenger Vessel Services Act for a limited time.

Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Sitka, and Ketchikan are among the ports of call on the Nieuw Amsterdam’s new seven-day voyages to Alaska. There will be breathtaking vistas of Glacier Bay and Stephens Passage as well. The ship will continue to cruise until October 2, 2024.

Guests will be able to take use of all of the facilities on board as well as participate in local culture via programs provided by special guests. The cruise line’s unique Story presentation, which takes passengers through the history of Holland America Line and the current difficulties of the worldwide suspension, is well worth some time, according to Brand Ambassador Seth Wayne.

The Nieuw Amsterdam is the third big cruise ship to return to Alaska after a hiatus. Celebrity Millennium, a Celebrity Cruises ship, set off on Friday. When she left Seattle on July 19, Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of the Seas became the first cruise ship to resume service in Alaska.

The Holland America cruise ship has a gross tonnage of 86,700 tons and can accommodate 2,106 passengers as well as approximately 900 crew members.

Then I discovered that Holland America Line was introducing a new cruise from Vancouver, which would include an overnight in Seattle (where I live) and an overnight in Los Angeles..
