The big news from today is that the Oasis of the Seas has been approved for test sailing from New Jersey. The cruise line is now planning to test the ship out on the open ocean, and the first time it will travel from its home port of Bayonne, NJ to the Caribbean will be on Saturday, May 25th.
Commercial sea trials on a ship are required by law to be carried out in order to approve a ship for its first voyage. This means that the ship’s crew will be given a series of tests, designed to ensure that the ship is seaworthy and safe.
The $1.6 billion Royal Caribbean cruise ship will be the first of its kind to sail on the U.S. East Coast since the late 1990s. The first part of the “world’s largest cruise ship”, named Oasis of the Seas, is expected to make her debut on the East Coast in mid-2018 after months of delays due to the now-infamous duck-boat crisis. The Oasis of the Seas has received approval from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to make a test cruise from Bayonne, N.J., in August. The move comes as Royal Caribbean continues to pursue plans to resume cruise operations from the United States.
The CDC has approved the use of an Oasis-class vessel for a trial voyage based at the Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, New Jersey. This will be the first test of the gate.
The Oasis of the Seas will set sail on August 22, 2023 for a trial voyage and August 28, 2023 for a trial voyage. Return in August 2023, which is longer than the usual 2 night cruises we’ve seen so far. This allows the cruise line to test all protocols under the supervision of the CDC.

If all goes well, the vessel will receive a conditional license. Once the Oasis of the Seas is certified, she will be allowed to take profitable cruises again.
The CDC approval was announced by Michael Bailey, Royal Caribbean’s President and CEO:
Congratulations! From the CDC! The attached letter (not attached to this notice) is the CDC’s preliminary approval of your request to conduct a simulated voyage aboard the Oasis of the Seas (departure from Bayonne) from August 22 to 28, 2023, in accordance with the Master Conditional Voyage Regulations.
When the ship does its trial run, there will be volunteers on board. When the ship finally leaves on its voyage of sale, all crew members on board will have been fully vaccinated. Most guests will also be fully vaccinated, along with a small percentage of unvaccinated guests, as recommended by the CDC.
The big question is when the Oasis of the Seas will reopen. So far, Royal Caribbean has not included the ship in its recovery plans from the US and has only issued protocols for cruises from Florida, Texas, Washington, Cyprus and the Bahamas.
