The 10 Best Georgia Beaches To Escape To

Because of the diverse fauna that can be seen on the island, beachcombers and bird watchers flock to this beach location. If you like learning about local animals, the Georgia Beach Walks are a must-see–perfect for learning more about your natural surrounds as well as the history of the barrier island! Similarly, the aquatic life is fascinating. During your stay, you may encounter whales, dolphins, or even a manatee!

Pack a comfortable beach chair with your beach gear if you intend to relax on the beach with a good book. The sand on East Beach is famously hard-packed. It’s great for riding a bike, but it’s not so great for sunbathing.

On St. Simons Island, there are a number of other things to see and do, including:

  • Pier Village is a small fishing village on the coast
  • The Lighthouse of St. Simons

  • National Monument of Fort Frederica
  • Bluff of Gascoigne

Tybee Island

You owe it to yourself to visit Tybee Island if you find yourself in Savannah. It’s no surprise that Tybee Island was dubbed “Savannah’s Beach” since it’s just 30 minutes from the city. Three ocean-facing beaches and two river beaches are available on Tybee Island. These aren’t only the finest Georgia beaches; they’re also some of the best beaches in the United States!

While the public beaches on Tybee Island are not pet-friendly, there are adjacent dog parks and nature trails to explore with your four-legged buddy. It’s also pet-friendly if you kayak across to Tybee Island is a small island off the coast of Georgia..

North Beach is a neighborhood in Miami Beach, Florida

When you arrive on Tybee Island, the first beach you’ll notice is North Beach. It’s close to Tybee Island’s retail area, so if you like shopping (or are traveling with someone who does), this is the place to be. Sailing, surfing, kayaking, and jet skiing are just a few of the water sports available along the beach.

The sand on North Beach isn’t as soft as it is on South Beach is a neighborhood in Miami Beach, Florida, but it is considerably calmer. This is the Tybee Island beach to visit if you want to spend a quiet day reading a nice book.

Nearby, you’ll discover Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse. Between the Tybee Island Lighthouse and Museum, you may learn about almost 400 years of island history!

Mid Beach

Mid Beach is the quietest of all the Tybee Island Beaches, located halfway between North and South Beach. This is most likely due to its mostly residential setting, few beachfront facilities, and more difficult access. However, if you know where to go, it’s simple to find—just follow Highway 80 south of Lovell Avenue.

Take notice, beachcombers: Mid Beach is the finest beach on Tybee Island for gathering seashells. You may even come upon a shark tooth!

South Beach

This is the place to go if you’re searching for downtown Tybee Island. South Beach, which is considered Tybee Island’s downtown section, has a wide range of stores, restaurants, and bars, as well as the Tybee Pier and Pavillion picnic spots and the Tybee Island Marine Science Center.

South Beach is the most popular of the three ocean beaches because to its moderate surf and fine sand. It also boasts the largest parking lot of the three beaches, and a lifeguard is usually constantly on duty. Of course, because of these characteristics, it is the busiest beach on the island, and a particular favorite among families.

If you’re visiting Tybee Island, you should also go to:

  • Savannah River Beach is a popular tourist destination in Georgia.
  • Beach on the Back River
  • Nature paths and the Fort Pulaski National Monument
  • Tybee Lighthouse is a lighthouse on the coast of Georgia.

Jekyll Island

Another hidden treasure amid Georgia’s Golden Isles. Jekyll Island, situated just south of St. Simons Island and linked to the mainland of Georgia by a bridge, is a short trip off I-95 (near Brunswick). Beach of Glory

The beach may be familiar to you as a shooting site for the Academy Award-winning film Glory. The boardwalk at the Jekyll Island Soccer Complex leads to this lovely Georgia beach on the island’s south end, just south of South Dunes.

Visitors are likely to see local animals and birds in addition to the golden sand dunes. This beach, in reality, is a bird sanctuary and a popular spot for birdwatchers. It’s worth noting that this beach is a no-pet zone all year owing to the breeding shorebirds.

Driftwood Beach is a beach with driftwood.

While Driftwood Beach is a bit off the main route, it is a must-see location on the island because of its amazing sculpture-like trees. On Beachview Drive North, you’ll discover a little path leading to a tiny parking area–this is your route to the beach!

While the beach is called for the year-round driftwood that washes up on the coast, you’ll note that the trees that grow along the beach have an odd growth pattern–they grow downwards! This is due to a variety of environmental factors as well as localized soil erosion. What’s the end result? Trees that seem to be on the verge of collapsing. Both the unique trees and the washed-up driftwood provide an almost art-gallery-like vista of Mother Nature’s best creations.

Pro Tip: Visit Driftwood Beach at low tide to have a better view of the beach and the surrounding natural beauty. Also, don’t forget to bring insect spray with you to the beach!

Beach in St. Andrews

St. Andrews Beach may not be the greatest location to swim, but it is unquestionably the best spot for bird-watching, dolphin-watching, and shelling. St. Andrews Beach, on the riverfront of the island, faces Jekyll Sound and is only a short walk from Jekyll Point on the island’s southern extremity.

Although the beach is considerably smaller than Driftwood Beach, St. Andrews Beach has lots of local driftwood. Try to visit at low tide, since there isn’t much coastline when the tide comes in, like there is at Driftwood Beach.

If you’re visiting Jekyll Island, you should also go to:

  • Beach at South Dunes
  • Beach with a View
  • Beach Park at Great Dunes
  • The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to the
  • Memorial to the Wanderer
  • Beach Resort
  • Golf courses with beautiful scenery

Sapelo Island

Sapelo Island, unlike the other barrier islands listed, is a state-protected island that requires you to go with a pre-approved tour group. Sapelo Island may only be reached by boat or aircraft from the Sapelo Island Visitors Center. I suggest taking the ferry–a it’s quick journey! Overall, a trip to Sapelo Island requires a bit more forethought, but the Sapelo Island beaches are well worth the effort.

Beach of the Nanny Goat

Nanny Goat Beach is located on the island’s southeast coast. The Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve often uses this beach, so you may see groups out on beach walks.

Nanny Goat Beach, with almost 2 miles of coastline, is a great location to come if you like beachcombing–the beach is littered with whelk shells and sand dollars. Similarly, since there is little commercialization along the shore, the native fauna is abundant. Sightings of blue herons, ospreys, and even bald eagles are quite common here! Nanny Goat Beach is a great place to go for a peaceful stroll and take in the natural beauty of the area.

Don’t forget to take a stroll down the adjacent path that links this beach to the grounds of the Reynolds Mansion is a mansion in the city of Reynolds!

Cabretta Beach is located in Cabretta, Georgia.

Cabretta Beach and the Cabretta Campground are located north of Nanny Goat Beach. Spending a weekend at the Cabretta Campground is a must-do if you like camping. You’ll forego the crowds of more crowded coastal locations in exchange for a one-of-a-kind experience on one of Georgia’s most isolated (and gorgeous) islands.

Cabretta’s hard-packed sands, like those of Nanny Goat Beach, are ideal for strolling and exploring the coastline than for swimming.

If you happen to be in Sapelo Island, you should also check out:

  • Hammock Hogg
  • Lighthouse of Sapelo
  • Reynolds Mansion

More information on day trips on Sapelo Island may be found here.

Cumberland Island National Seashore is a national park on the island of Cumberland.

The Cumberland Island National Seashore includes 17 miles of beaches that stretch over most of Cumberland Island. This island, like Sapelo Island, is only accessible by boat. In the neighboring town of St. Marys, you may take a ferry across. However, since capacity on the boat is limited, it’s advisable to make reservations ahead of time!

The National Park Service manages the island, which has a maximum capacity of 300 persons. While this may require some additional preparation, the main benefit is that it is seldom crowded!

Cumberland Island is a nature lover’s dream come true, with its beautiful sandy shorelines, crystal blue lakes, and gorgeous southern flora. If you like trekking trails and seeing local animals, this is the finest Georgia beach to visit.

Sea Camp Beach is a wonderful place to visit if you want to see the woodland beach and salt marshes. Make your way to Stafford Beach if you’re seeking for a more remote experience–beachcombers love it for its coquinas, shark teeth, and moon snails.

If you’re planning a trip to Cumberland Island, don’t forget to check out:

  • The Cumberland Island National Seashore Museum is located on the island of Cumberland (in St. Marys)
  • Museum of the Ice House
  • Dungeness Crab with Plum Orchard
