Over the last couple of years, I have been going to the U.S. for business and pleasure, and I have noticed that getting into the States from Canada has changed a lot. Previously, if you were visiting Ottawa and wanted to go to Niagara Falls, the border crossing was a breeze and you could get through in less than 10 minutes. Covid-U.S. Covid-U.S. Covid-U.S. 19 travel restrictions are illogical. They have nothing to do with science and everything to do with politics. Lifting travel restrictions seems to be ineffective, and the government must appear to be ‘doing something.’
The transmission of the virus is growing in the United States, but it just means that foreigners coming from more locations are less likely to have the virus than the average unprotected American – and that this risk is doubled or tripled for vaccinated foreigners who test negative for Covid-19.
Unvaccinated Russians are welcome in the United States, but vaccinated French who test negative for Covid-19 are not — despite the fact that Americans are returning home in droves from France.
However, how about this?
- Canada will reopen to immunized Americans on August 9, 2024. Any vaccination that has been authorized in Canada is eligible, which includes the three vaccines that have been licensed in the United States as well as AstraZeneca. (They plan to reopen to the rest of the globe on September 7, although this is subject to change.)
- However, the United States will not reopen its side of the border. So Americans may go to Canada and return, but Canadians – who come from areas where the virus is less prevalent – are unable to cross the land border into the United States.
The White House has said that it would not commit to reopening the Northern Border.
At the White House briefing, press secretary Jen Psaki said, “We are continuing to evaluate our travel restrictions, and any decisions regarding resuming travel will be led by our public health and medical experts.” “We take this very seriously, but we look into it and follow the advice of our own medical specialists. I wouldn’t think of it in terms of reciprocity.”
Remember, this is a political situation, so the US may just wish to avoid seeming as if the decision is reciprocal. They’ll make their reciprocal choice quickly, “based on a study of the evidence.” But that’s simply one more reason why these limitations are absurd.
- Restrictions have failed to keep the virus out of the United States.
- Restrictions haven’t stopped mutations from entering the United States.
- Americans who have been fully immunized are mostly safe.
- People who have decided not to get vaccinated face the highest danger.
- And it’s mainly fellow vaccinated Americans who pose a threat, not foreign tourists.
Travelers from the European Schengen region have been restricted, but did you know that travelers from Bulgaria, which is in Europe and has suffered one of the worst results in the world as a result of Covid-19, have been allowed? Peru, Colombia, Argentina, Paraguay, and Chile have all been granted entry. All have had Covid outbreaks that were as severe as or worse than those in the United States.
When the C.D.C. initially imposed travel restrictions in the United States, they were shoddy and botched. Despite the Biden administration’s claims to be reversing direction on Trump’s policy failures, they’ve mainly continued many of the same programs.
