Pittsburgh International Airport is now the first major airport in the world to become fully self-sufficient with a new microgrid that runs on natural gas and solar power.

A microgrid is an independent energy source that can operate autonomously while remaining connected to the traditional grid. It is fueled by natural gas produced on-site by CNX Resources, gas from the interstate pipeline system, and solar energy. The project will provide a more efficient, sustainable and reliable source of energy.

Pittsburgh Becomes First Airport To Be Powered on Its Own

Pittsburgh International Airport is now one of the most resilient public facilities in the world and is becoming even more resilient. It is a tribute to the innovative culture of our team, and we hope this project can serve as a model for the entire industry, said Christina Cassotis, CEO of Pittsburgh International Airport.

The microgrid will consist of five natural gas-fired generators and nearly 10,000 solar panels capable of producing more than 20 megawatts of electricity, the equivalent of powering more than 13,000 homes.

The airport’s current peak demand is approximately 14 megawatts.

Airports across the country are looking for ways to improve the resilience and reliability of electricity supplies after several high-profile power outages led to the cancellation of thousands of flights and disruption to passengers.

As Pittsburgh International Airport seeks to become the world’s smartest airport with its new terminal project, implementing smart energy infrastructure is an important step that can serve as a model for others.

Innovation is in the DNA of our region, and the construction of this microgrid reflects the work being done at the airport to maximize public safety and sustainability, said Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. I am very proud that the airport uses almost 10,000 solar panels as a sustainable energy source. Along with the other energy sources produced at the airport, this continues to position the facility as a leader in the industry.
