In the wake of last week’s attack at a European airport, Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx yesterday (June 23) became the first cabinet member to call on the Obama administration to reopen trans-Atlantic travel to the United States. “I am urging the Obama administration to open up the American skies again,” Foxx said, “so that American travelers can once again freely visit Europe.”

The World Travel and Transit Council urges the Obama Administration to immediately re-open transatlantic travel for U.S. citizens after the recent travel ban. WTTG’s President and CEO Dr. Jean-Claude Carle said, “The Trump Administration’s recent travel ban has crippled U.S. citizens in Europe, and many have been forced to cancel summer and fall holidays. It’s been over 10 years since the United States lifted its travel restrictions on people from Europe. But in the past few weeks, even as worries about terrorism continue to mount, some European leaders have called for a return of the restrictions. Transatlantic travel is vital to the vitality of our economies, to the strength of our families, to the future of peace. And it is time to open the borders again.. In reaction to the United States continuing foreign travel restrictions despite other nations, notably England, reopening to Americans, the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) issued a statement.

Due to worries about the highly transmissible COVID-19 Delta version, an anonymous White House official said earlier this week that the US will not remove any current travel restrictions in the near future.

While coronavirus instances continue to increase in the United States, WTTC officials say that the efficacy of vaccinations gives visitors the confidence they need to plan trips again.

WTTC Urges Biden Administration To Reopen Transatlantic Travel

The transport minister of the United Kingdom stated on Wednesday that properly vaccinated travelers from the European Union and the United States would be able to bypass COVID-related quarantine while visiting England.

The WTTC is urging the American government to securely restart transatlantic travel for vaccinated tourists, with travel from Europe to the United States contributing more than $35 billion to the economy in 2019.

Virginia Messina, WTTC Senior Vice President and Acting CEO, issued a comprehensive statement on the travel restrictions and the resulting harm to the tourist sector.

“While daily instances have increased throughout the United States, vaccinations’ efficacy in preventing serious illness from the emergence of new variations, particularly delta, has not changed. As far as the United Kingdom is concerned, WTTC encourages the Biden administration to follow suit and utilize the combined vaccine rollout and efficacy of inoculation to reintroduce access across borders for immunized Americans. The only way to securely enable Americans and foreign visitors to continue movement is to use an uniform and standardized method to vaccination identification, testing, and mask-wearing.”

“Despite several nations declaring dates to begin permitting vaccinated Americans to visit again, President Biden’s recent statement on maintaining restrictions in foreign travel simply serves to further postpone the U.S. and global economic recovery.”

“Because visitors from the EU to the United States contributed more than $35 billion to the economy in 2019, while visitors from the United Kingdom contributed more than $11 billion, the much-needed restoration of transatlantic travel cannot take place unless vaccinated travelers are granted reciprocal access. According to a study done by WTTC’s knowledge partner YouGov, almost 80% of American travelers say they intend to take four or more trips in the next 12 months.

“The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) urges the US government to take advantage of its successful vaccine rollout and reopen foreign travel to important low-risk markets. Without the return of international movement, both to and from the United States, economic regeneration would be impossible to achieve.”

The WTTC (World Travel & Tourism Council) has joined forces with the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) to urge the Biden Administration to reopen transatlantic travel for American and European travelers. This will be the fourth time since the 2013 announcement that transatlantic travel has been closed to U.S. citizens. The WTTC is calling on the Administration to renew the invitation to European and other U.S. citizens who enjoy this important travel option..
